KINETIC - Ocean's Call

KINETIC opens its fourth season with an evocative collage of three works inspired by the captivating shapes and sounds water takes on in particular physical spaces. The program includes musical depictions of the Welsh coastline and the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as a world-premiere string orchestra version of Ocean’s Call by emerging American composer Daniel Temkin.

Austin Camerata - Festival Finale "Reinventions"

Internationally renowned violinist Chee-Yun Kim and choreographer Dorothy O’Shea Overbey join Austin Camerata's conductorless chamber orchestra to present "Reinventions," a two night season finale.

-Violinist Chee-Yun stars in Astor Piazzolla's beloved "Four Seasons of Buenos Aires" for violin and chamber orchestra. 

-Austin Camerata presents one of the most powerful works of the 20th century: Dmitri Shostakovich's String Quartet no. 8 in collaboration with original choreography for five dancers. The Russian masterpiece is a powerful reflection on war, politics, and the personal struggle of a composer caught between his own demons and dictatorship under the Soviet Union. Reimagined with innovative choreography, musicians and dancers come together to augment the music's gripping narrative.

KINETIC - Musical Madness

From outrageous fugues to murderous madrigals, KINETIC’s season finale centers on the famously shocking Grosse Fuge, one of Beethoven’s last works. Also featured are the works of Renaissance duke Carlo Gesualdo, famous for his dissonant writing and the grisly murder of his lover, and Golijov’s Last Round for nine musicians, which evokes the spirit of the late Tango composer Piazzolla. Finally, KINETIC’s own violinist-composer Giancarlo Latta will offer his own reflections on the Grosse Fuge with a world premiere you won’t want to miss!

KINETIC - Inner Voices

KINETIC’s winter program celebrates the unique and diverse artistic voices of the ensemble's musicians and guest collaborators. Featuring works for atypical ensemble configurations, the program begins with Elgar’s celebrated Introduction & Allegro for String Quartet and Strings, followed by former Chicago Symphony Orchestra Mead Composer-in-Residence Anna Clyne's "Prince of Clouds," featuring KINETIC soloists Natalie Lin and Giancarlo Latta. Continuing with their cycle of Benjamin Britten’s string ensemble works, KINETIC concludes “Inner Voices” with the expansive and pastoral Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings with tenor soloist Christopher Bozeka (Houston Grand Opera Studio) and hornist Robert Johnson (Houston Symphony Orchestra).

KINETIC - Duos, Dances, & Divertimenti

KINETIC launches their third season with a program of folk-inspired music from Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. Rautavaara’s Pelimannit (“Fiddlers”) and Bartok’s Romanian Dances are rustic miniatures based on Finnish and Romanian folk tunes, while Olli Mustonen’s Sinuhe for violin orchestra tells the story of Sinuhe, the personal physician at the court of the Pharaoh Akhenaten. Closing the program is Bartok’s Divertimento, a staple of the string orchestra repertoire, composed before Bartok left Hungary at the outbreak of the Second World War.

Open Dance Project

Musiqa and Open Dance Project present a compelling evening of world premieres featuring KINETIC, the conductorless orchestra. Highlights of the program include two new pieces choreographed by Open Dance Project Artistic Director Annie Arnoult to riveting works for string orchestra by Musiqa composers Pierre Jalbert and Marcus Maroney. Plus guest artist Jane Weiner, founder and artistic director of Hope Stone Dance, choreographs "Lonely Suite (Ballet for Lonely Violinist)." Rounding out the program are Arnoult’s celebrated piece "Stalemate" with music by Andrew Bird, and "Silent Moon," a duo for violin and cello, by composer Augusta Read Thomas.
